A £1M SCHEME which aims to breathe new life into Worcester’s waterfront is set to get underway by the end of the summer.
The first phase of the city council project will see an enhancement of the western side of the River Severn from the New Road bridge down to Diglis.
It will include the resurfacing of the riverside’s main path to improve access for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users while a new entrance with attractive artwork is planned for Bromwich Parade.
Picnic tables and extra benches and seats will be installed along with a timber viewing platform offering riverside views up and down stream.
The council will also take the opportunity to put up new signage to match that already found in the neighbouring Chapter Meadows.
The initial phase of work was given the green light at a meeting of the city council’s cabinet on Monday night.
Councillor Simon Geraghty, leader of the city council, said: “This is an exciting and ambitious project and this year we are aiming to do work on the west side and to make that route more accessible as well as incorporating some key features.
“This is much more the rural theme before we do the east side next year where we will be linking up and stretching out that vision along the riverside towards Diglis.
“Some key focal points will be improved on the east side and we will have better lighting and things like CCTV.”
The second phase of riverside improvements will get underway next year and will include enhancements along the east side of the river from the main bridge to the new developments at Diglis.
This will include new lighting and an improved footpath linking in with the new Sustrans Connect2 cycle and footbridge at Diglis which is set to be completed by 2010.
