THE TASK group set up to look at the provision of hot meals for older people across the county heard from two meal providers at its latest meeting.
The Meal Provision for Older and Vulnerable Adults Scrutiny Task Group met representatives from both Wyre Forest Community Housing and the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) to discuss the roles the two currently play in providing elderly and vulnerable people with daily hot meals.
From July 1, the county council will withdraw its funding to Himbleton House in St John’s, Chelmsford Court in Ronkswood and Rowan Court in Tolladine in an attempt to reduce this year’s budget by £260,000.
In the latest task group meeting held on June 12, representatives from the two meal providers spoke to task group members about their roles in providing the hot meals.
Nigel Fain, from Wyre Forest Community Housing, spoke about what his organisation was doing in terms of providing lunch clubs around the district before answering questions on the subject.
Peter Dicker and Clive Webley from WRVS, the organisation which currently delivers hot meals to people across Worcestershire, outlined what their group does in terms of delivering the service, including details about the distribution processes and food quality control procedures, before also fielding questions.
Peter Pinfield, the chairman of the task group, said: “It was really useful for the members to hear about the work both Wyre Forest Community Housing and the WRVS are doing when it comes to delivering this vital service.
“It is important we gather as much information as possible to gain an overview of what is currently being done across Worcestershire before sitting down and compiling a list of recommendations that could make things even better for the people using this service.”
The task group will now visit Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire County Councils to see how their respective hot meals services work before visiting some of the sheltered homes and attending food tasting sessions.
