SUPERMARKET giant ASDA has received more then 3,500 applications from people looking to work in its first ever Worcester store which is set to open in March.
The new 41,000 square foot supermarket in Lowesmoor is nearing completion after ASDA bosses were handed the keys to the store by developer Carillion Richardson last month.
There has been huge interest in the 300 jobs set to be created at the 24-hour store, which will officially open its doors on Monday, March 26.
The supermarket has been built on the historic former site of the Hill Evans and Co vinegar factory and will form the centrepiece of the £75million St Martin's Quarter.
The development will eventually feature 284,050 square feet of shops, restaurants, offices and leisure outlets including a gym.
Richard Kinnea, the new ASDA store's general manager said: “The number of job applications we have received so far is fantastic and we are still welcoming applications.
“We’ve worked very closely with the council to help bring this historic area back to life, retaining many of its original features in our design and hope this is something Worcester residents will be excited by."
The supermarket will include a café, pharmacy and photo centre, multi-level pay and display parking and a 7,500 square foot George section, stocking the clothing brand’s newest lines.
With work nearing completion on ASDA, developer Carillion Richardson has shifted its attention to transforming the old Infirmary building and retail units on Silver Street into offices.
The plans, which have been submitted to the city council, will see the dilapidated buildings completely restored.
Since the 18th Century the buildings have been used as an Infirmary, boarding school, a Working Men’s Institute, a tin plate factory and most recently a retail wine warehouse. This part of the development is set to be completed by August.
