A PRIMARY school has received a late Christmas present after Worcester MP Robin Walker donated it £1,000 worth of books.

Mr Walker has decided to give the books to Gorse Hill Community Primary School after winning the prize in a library-themed quiz at the launch of the new Libraries Group in the Houses of Parliament.

He chose the Warndon school after spending many hours reading with pupils while he was a prospective parliamentary candidate.

“I am extremely pleased to have won the quiz and I am absolutely delighted to be able to donate the prize to Gorse Hill Community Primary School’s library," he said.

"The books which this will allow them to buy will, no doubt, form a key part of the school library’s efforts to promote and develop literacy, which is of such vital importance to children of that age. I know from the time I spent at Gorse Hill, how much they will be appreciated by the children there.”

The quiz prizes were provided by CILIP (the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals), and by Scholastic Book Clubs.

The launch event also gave Mr Walker and other MPs and Peers the chance to hear bestselling author Tony Hawks and the Libraries Minister, Ed Vaizey, talk about the importance of libraries.
