Man jailed for breaching domestic abuse order

By Rob George 25/01 Updated: 26/01 17:06

A WORCESTER man has become the first person in the county to be jailed for breaching a Domestic Violence Prevention Order (DVPO).

Tomasz Olesky, of Teme Road in Tolladine, was sentenced last Thursday (January 19) to two weeks in prison for breaching an order issued after a domestic incident on December 30.

The 29-year-old is also one of the first people in England to be jailed for breaking the order which is being trialled in the county by West Mercia Police.

The force is one of only three policing areas in the country along with Wiltshire and Greater Manchester to trial the project, which began last July.

The new process builds on existing police measures and provides emergency protection for a victim, giving them space to explore the options available to them and make informed decisions about their safety.

Olesky was served with the DVPO on January 3 at Worcester Magistrates' Court, which banned him from entering a city address or communicating with a particular person.

But the 29-year-old breached the order five days later and was given an £85 fine by magistrates after he was found at the property.

After being found at the address again last Wednesday (January 18), Olesky was arrested and sentenced to 14 days in jail.

Det Sgt Sharon Avery, who is co-ordinating the pilot project for West Mercia Police, said: "It is for the whole criminal justice system to support the orders and I am pleased to see magistrates use the powers they have to take strong action against Olesky.

"It sends out a message that those who ignore DVPOs will be punished, increasingly so if they continue to breach them."

"Two weeks in jail will not only be a sharp penalty for him, but it will give his intended victim the protection and breathing space they need in the coming weeks," she added.

The pilot project in West Mercia will last 12 months and be assessed by the Home Office.
