A busy start to the year

A MUSICAL group is blowing its own trumpet after a hectic first few months of the year.

Malvern Hills District Brass Band has not only been hard at work raising money for charity and being highly placed in competitions, but also recently welcomed Christopher Small as its new musical director.

Mr Small, 22, is studying euphonium at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

He said: “I’m delighted to be the new musical director. Having had recent conducting guidance at the Conservatoire from Ian Porthouse, MD of Welsh champions the Tredegar Band, this is a great opportunity for me.”

The band recently presented a cheque for £635 to Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust, the proceeds of a Christmas concert held at Huntingdon Hall, together with a proportion of the money collected during carolling sessions. 

The band then competed at the National Championship Midlands area contest held at Bedworth, Warwickshire, under Mr Small’s baton and obtained a creditable seventh out of 24 bands. 

Band spokeswoman Jenny Cobley said: “We have a busy playing season ahead of us, starting with yet another contest at Weston-Super-Mare on May 20, so will be practising in earnest. As usual, we still have a couple of vacancies, and welcome anyone who would like to come along and join us, especially cornet players.”
