ONE of the city's most popular restaurants is set to re-open under a new name and new owners later this month.
Browns, on Quay Street, closed back in January after the company which owned it went into administration.
But Brian Hulme of Scoff & Quaff Holdings has purchased the freehold with business partner Terry Thompson, who owns Bowl Extreme in Perdiswell.
The riverside eatery will open under the new name Browns Wine Bar on Tuesday, April 24 with the owners promising a more casual dining experience to the previous restaurant. It's also expected to create a number of new jobs.
Diners will be able to tuck into mostly Mediterranean cuisine in the form of tapas, sharing plates light bites or a formal three course meal. It will serve a diverse selection of between 40 to 50 quality wines, many of which can be purchased by the bottle, glass or sampled as a taster shot. The Wine Bar will also host a number of special events throughout the year.
Mr Hulme is no stranger to the dining and hospitality industry and already runs seven pubs across the Midlands including The Swan at Whittington and The King’s Head in Sidbury. Scoff and Quaff Holdings also recently bought and re-opened The Crown and Sandys in Ombersley, which was owned by the same company as Browns and was also forced to close.
Mr Hulme said: “Browns has always had a reputation for being one of the city’s leading venues and its idyllic riverside location means that the venue is of sentimental value to many local people.”
Mr Thompson added: "Having identified a gap in the local market we are excited to unveil a brand new concept in the form of Browns Wine Bar.” Browns Wine Bar will be open seven days a week and will serve food daily.
