TV talent pair join Olympic celebration

WITH just days to go until thousands of people welcome the Olympic Flame to Worcester the final line-up for the city's spectacular Evening Celebration has been revealed.

Former Britain's Got Talent finalists Twist and Pulse will perform at Worcestershire County Cricket Club's New Road ground on Thursday (May 24), where 10,000 people with gather for an thrilling evening of Olympic celebrations.

The dance duo will join a bill which also includes chart-topping artist Labrinth, a troupe of street performers called the Flame Followers and a 1,000 strong community choir.

The choir will be performing a specially written piece about the city's history and heritage, called Raising the Sky, which has been written by BAFTA-nominated composer Nick Bicât with lyrics by playwright Chris Baldwin.

The evening celebration will mark the end of the Olympic Torch Relay's journey into the city which is set to be welcomed thousands of people lining the streets along the route.

The highlight of the evening will include the lighting of a giant cauldron after the Torch has made its way into New Road.

Georgia Smith, head of VisitWorcester and event lead for the city, said: “Months of preparation by hundreds of people across Worcester have gone into preparing for this historic event. I hope that, whether you’re watching the Torch Relay or joining the Evening Celebration, you’ll find this a moment to remember for the rest of your life.”

The Flame, carried by inspirational people chosen as torchbearers, will enter Worcester from Fernhill Heath at 6:35pm on Thursday and head down the A38 Droitwich Road to the city centre, before reaching the cricket ground.

St George's Square on Barbourne Road, the High Street, Cathedral Island in the Cathedral grounds and St Andrew’s Gardens on Deansway, are all be recommended as ideal spots to watch the Torch Relay's journey.

A host of events will be taking place along the route including face painting in the High Street, plus a juggling stilt walker, the Silurian Border Morrismen and live music from Jamie Knight. Other activities will also be taking place outside the Cathedral, outside Worcester College of Technology and All Saints Church on Deansway.

There will be no parking along the torch route and the affected roads will be closed from 6pm to 8pm, with the county council arranging for the Perdiswell Park and Ride service to operate into the evening.

People with tickets to the Evening Celebration are being asked to arrive at New Road by 4pm and remember to bring with them photo ID. No bags, food, drink or umbrellas will be allowed.

The Torch will then continue its journey from Worcester at 7.58am on Friday (May 25) with the Cathedral Island, College Green, South Quay and outside the cricket ground at New Road all recommended viewing spots. Roads will be closed from 7.30am to 9am.
