A MAN who brought part of the city centre to a standstill during a rooftop-stand off with police which lasted more than five hours has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

The man, who is believed to be in his 20s, climbed on top of the building on the corner of Union Street and Friar Street after police were called to a reported domestic incident.

The stand-off took place from about 12noon to 5.30pm as police tried to coax him down.

He eventually came down voluntarily before being arrested by police.

The man is currently in police custody.
