YOUNG bookworms in Warndon picked up a gold medal for completing a marathon reading challenge over the summer.

Enthusiastic primary school children got their head stuck into a book as part of the Summer Reading Challenge at Warndon Library.

They joined hundreds of youngsters across the county in taking part in the annual challenge which encourages children to pursue their love of reading over the summer months when they are away from school.

Their reward for completing six books during the Olympic-dominated summer was a gold medal of their own along with a special certificate which was presented to them by Warndon city and county councillor Alan Amos.

Coun Amos said: “I think it’s a terrific idea. It’s all about giving the kids something positive to achieve and it also gets parents involved in their children’s reading.”
