Woman in stable condition after being hit on 'dangerous' road

A WOMAN is in a stable condition in hospital after being hit by a car while crossing a busy road in Worcester on Monday (December 10) morning.

But the collision on Spetchley Road comes just weeks after Nunnery city councillor Richard Boorn warned the road was “an accident waiting to happen.”

A silver grey Vauxhall Zafira was turning right onto the road from the junction of Nunnery Wood High School when it collided with the woman in her 60s at about 8am.

She suffered several injuries, including what was thought to have been a serious head injury, and was taken to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by Air Ambulance.

Her head injury was not as serious as first thought and she remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Coun Boorn voiced his fears over the safety of Spetchley Road at a council planning committee meeting on November 23, where members were asked for their views on plans to build 256 homes on Uffnels Farm near Whittington.

Developer Bloor Homes wants to create access to the site off Spetchley Road but Coun Boorn was among those who spoke out against the proposal and warned the road was already dangerously busy.

There were calls for the access to be moved to the A4440 Swinesherd Way but Worcestershire County Council’s Highways Department said this was not an option.

Coun Boorn said: “It gives me no satisfaction to have predicted this kind of accident was going to happen but sadly it has very quickly. I just do not understand what has to happen for this to be taken seriously - does someone need to be killed? This lady is not the only person who has been knocked down on Spetchley Road in the rush hour. This needs to be taken seriously now and some compromises have to be made for the sake of people’s safety.”

The application for the housing development is set to go before Wychavon planners in early January.

Jon Fraser, the council’s Highways Manager, said: “A planning application has been made for additional residential development in the area and, if approved, the impact of traffic and parking from this development upon Spetchley Road will be monitored and may result in some local changes. If so, these would be a condition of the planning consent, and funded by the developer.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision and anyone who has information can call the non-emergency police number 101.
