RESIDENTS are being urged to belt up as they drive around the county this festive season.

Chiefs from the Safer Road Partnership and West Mercia Police have called on drivers and passengers to ensure they wear their seatbelt on every journey they make in a car.

According to a report from the Department of Transport, fewer people use their belts when taking journeys late at night, early in the morning or within low speed limit areas.

Anna Higgins, SRP communications manager said: “Although many people do wear their seatbelt, there are still some who either choose not to or simply forget.

“Nationally and locally, there are still collisions occurring where people haven’t worn their seatbelt and the injuries sustained could have been avoided if seatbelts were used.

“Seatbelts are an effective means of reducing serious injuries and fatalities and anything we can do to increase their use has got to be a positive step.”

AN AWARDS ceremony celebrating women from the county is set to hit its £25,000 fund-raising target.

Worcestershire Women of the Year Awards, which has been running for over 20 years, has been backed by companies from the area as it raises money for St Richard’s Hospice.

Chair Andrea Palmer said the willingness of businesses to support the awards had been overwhelming.

“It is fantastic that companies are able to help us out when there are so many other pressures on budgets and so many good causes in the county.”

Nominations for the awards are open until March 1. Visit www.worcswomen.com or call Evelyn Birt on 07799 885996 for more information.

HUNDREDS of images of the hidden treasures of Worcestershire are now available online.

Worcestershire County Council has teamed up with Worcester Museum and Art Gallery to show off pictures from their collections. More than 400 images are available and many are also available to buy as postcards, prints and canvases.
