SIX people have been charged in relation to eight burglaries in Worcester during the run-up to Christmas.
Three men were arrested on December 16 after a burglary at a property in New Street at 7.45pm when a laptop, an Xbox and some jewellery were stolen.
The men were spotted on nearby City Walls Road by CCTV operators and arrested soon after by officers.
All three were interviewed and charged with the offence the next day and appeared at Worcester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (December 18), where they were remanded in custody.
Sweets and cash were also stolen from the County Cuisine café in Sidbury between 12pm on Sunday (Dec 16) and 8.30am on Monday. A man in his 30s was arrested on Thursday and charged the same day. He was bailed by the police to appear before magistrates in January.
On Tuesday, December 18 a house was burgled in Peacock Close where two laptops and a DJ mixing desk were stolen.
But a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) patrolling the area as part of West Mercia’s burglary clampdown operation, Citadel, used his local knowledge to identify a man in his 20s who was spotted in the area.
He called in officers who arrested the man soon afterwards. He was charged with the offence two days later and appeared at Worcester Magistrates’ Court where he was remanded in custody.
A man in his 40s from Worcester was also charged with five burglaries that occurred in Worcester city centre in November and December, including four businesses and a house on London Road. He was remanded at court on Thursday.
Detective Inspector Richard Rees of Worcester CID’s Proactive Team, which investigates house burglaries, said: “We are doing all we can to investigate and prevent dwelling burglaries, which have been named the number one priority for West Mercia Police by the chief constable.
“It has been a real team effort to get so many suspects and offences before the courts and in the week before Christmas and we have been able to give some positive updates to victims of crime.”
