DOZENS of cannabis plants have been seized by police after a raid at a caravan site on the outskirts of Worcester.

Officers carried out warrants at the site in Smite, off Pershore Lane and found two containers housing 58 plants, which included 29 mature plants ready for harvesting.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of the cultivation of cannabis and is currently in custody at Worcester Police Station.

Officers also seized six illegally held shotgun cartridges and a scooter that is believed to have an engine stolen from another motorbike.

Inspector John McKay, who led the operation, said: "We received some intelligence in recent weeks that cannabis was being produced on the site and, following some surveillance activity, we have acted promptly to stop this operation.

"Residents on the site have been amenable and assisted with our investigation; many were shocked that cannabis was being grown on their doorstep, especially those who had families and children.

"We will act whenever we receive information that drugs are being produced in our community, so if you are aware of any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, please let us know."

Information can be passed on to West Mercia Police via the non-emergency police number 101 or anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
