Gritters hit the road as temperatures plummet

Wednesday 09 January 2013 Updated: 10/01 16:21

GRITTERS will be out across the county's roads tonight (Thursday) as temperatures drop below freezing.

The county's fleet are set to cover primary routes from 7pm but motorists are being warned to take care on roads, even if they have been gritted.

Echoing the call from Worcestershire County Council to keep safe on the roads, staff at Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service have urged motorists to be extra cautious.

Sharon Jones from the community safety department said: "We do tend to see an increase in collisions when the roads are icy and so we are keen to encourage motorists, particularly younger drivers who may not have driven on the ice before, to keen an eye on the weather and take extra care when freezing temperatures are forecast."

Safety advice includes regularly checking travel information, reducing speed and keeping a longer distance from the car in front, clearing ice from windows, mirrors and lights and ensuring the vehicle is well maintained and service.

Visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk/gritting to find out more or follow @worcscc for the council's Twitter account which features up-to-date information about gritting.
