THE ANNUAL pancake race outside Worcester Guildhall has been cancelled after an appeal for entries fell flat.

Worcester South Rotary Club has been forced to pull the plug on this Saturday's fund-raiser with only two teams having committed to the dash along the High Street.

Race organisers had shifted the race from Shrove Tuesday to a Saturday for the first time in its eight year history in an attempt to attract more families and clubs to enter, as well as the usual mix of city centre businesses.

Acorns Children's Hospice, the Maggs Day Centre, St Richard's Hospice as well as other Rotary charities were all set to benefit from the event.

But Rotarian David Scott said despite their best efforts to attract entries a lack of interest had left them with little choice but to cancel the event.

"It's enormously disappointing - we just don't know why we cannot get people to commit," he said.

"We changed it to Saturday in the hope that social clubs, schools and other groups we contacted might be able to come along but we've had no response sadly. It's very difficult."
