Motorists set to cash in on slashed parking charges

SLASHED parking charges will come into force from Friday with new tariffs as low as 40p.

The city council agreed last year to reduce prices at its car parks in Worcester in an effort to draw in more shoppers and bolster the economy.

The changes include new 30 minute parking charges of 40p and 60p, a flat rate evening parking price of £1 after 7pm and all-day parking at St Martin's Gate Car Park being cut from £6 to £3.60.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, cabinet member for economic prosperity, said: “These are significant changes to our car parking charges, which we think will give a real boost to Worcester businesses and provide extra convenience for our residents."

“I hope the reductions in all-day charges at our largest car park, St Martin’s Gate – together with reductions in our season tickets – will be a big hit with residents and commuters who drive into the city to work."

“When we reviewed our parking charges we felt there was a particular need to support the city’s night-time economy, so I’m very pleased about the new flat-rate evening charge. The 30 minute charge will be a help for people who need to make a very quick stop - to go to the cashpoint or drop off a library book, for example.”

Thirty minute parking will cost 60p at the red zone car parks in Copenhagen Street, Cornmarket and Providence Street and 40p in amber zone car parks at the Cattle Market, King Street, St Martin’s Gate, Clare Street, Commandery Road and Orchard House.
