Gritters head out to treat icy roads

GRITTERS will be out across the county tonight (Tuesday) as a precautionary measure.

The Worcestershire County Council team will focus on high ground areas and places with standing snow in a bid to keep icy road conditions at bay.

Much of the snowfall from yesterday (Monday) has now disappeared but road surface temperatures are expected to drop below freezing again this evening.

Salt from previous treatments is still on the roads but the gritters will go out from 7.30pm to cover sections of primary routes which need treating again.

Highways manager Jon Fraser said: "Hopefully we should soon have seen the last of the snow, which is good news for anyone who's been travelling on the county's road networks recently.

"However, cold temperatures and melting snow still mean roads are likely to be icy, and whilst we're ensuring roads are treated to help reduce the risk of accidents, grit is never a miracle solution and we're still urging drivers to take care out on Worcestershire's highways."
