TWO MEN charged with murdering an inmate at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire have appeared in court via video-link.

Gary Smith, 47, and Lee Newell, 44, are both accused of killing Subhan Anwar who was found dead in his cell at the South Littleton maximum security prison last Thursday (February 14).

The pair have been moved from Long Lartin to separate jails and appeared at Worcester Crown Court on a split-screen television link.

This morning's (Tuesday) preliminary hearing only lasted a few minutes while both men confirmed their names and that they understood the charges.

Mr Anwar, aged 25, was serving a minimum of 23 years after being convicted of the murder of his partner's two-year-old daughter, Sanam Navsarka, in Huddersfield in February 2009.

A post mortem examination found the cause of death was consistent with injuries from a broken neck.

Smith and Newell were remanded in custody case until a plea and case management hearing on May 7.
