Clergy hit the streets to collect prayers

CLERGY and other church members braved the cold as they took to the streets in St John's on Ash Wednesday to ask residents whether they could say a little prayer for them.

Reverend Chris Stuart, from St John-in-Bedwardine Church, was among those taking prayer requests from passers-by as part of the annual Pray One for Me scheme.

The requests were written down on cards to be prayed for at Ash Wednesday services across the county.

Rev Stuart said: "I think people, even if they haven't got a faith of their own, always appreciate that someone cares for them and wants to do something like that. We were trying to give something to the community, to pray for and support them and as people realised that I think they really opened up. We got a lot of prayer cards which was terrific."

Pray One for Me was inspired by the Bishop of Worcester Dr John Inge in 2009 when he collected prayers outside the Job Centre in Redditch, in an effort to help those badly affected by the economic downturn.

The Church of England also has a website, www.prayoneforme.org where anyone can post their prayer requests
